Jewelry Care

Storage
Protect your jewelry when it is not being worn by separating it from other jewelry. Zip-lock bag and individual cloth pouches are ideal for this and will help prevent both tarnishing and scratching by other pieces.  When you are not wearing your silver jewelry, store in a cool, dry place.

Pearls deserve special attention. Separate them into their own silk/cotton pouch and be sure they are clean and dry before storing.

Wearing
Put jewelry on after you apply hair spray or cosmetics. Chemicals present in either may cause damage, especially to pearls. Wipe your pearls with a soft cloth after each use to remove your skin's oils and salts.

A few colored gemstones, such as kunzite, may fade with repeated exposure to sunlight or a tanning booth.

Cleaning
A mild soap and water solution used with a soft brush is effective for most jewelry care needs.  Chemicals in some products can damage certain gems, such as pearls, even if they are considered to be mild. Even soft brushes used in applying cleansers can do damage to pearls. Soapy water cleans your pearls, but avoid getting the string wet since it may stretch or break.

Never use an ultrasonic cleaner, ammonia or any chemical solution to clean opaque gemstones, such as turquoise, onyx, lapis, etc. They are a porous stone and may absorb chemicals, which can cause discoloration. Simply wipe them gently with a moist cloth until clean.

To maintain the original condition of your silver jewelry, polish your pieces regularly using a non-abrasive sterling silver or gold polishing cloth.  Do not use paper towels; they can scratch the metal.  Never immerse your silver jewelry in chlorine, salt water, mineral springs, and suntan lotion.
